The year 2009 marks the birth of our beloved community-based Animation, Comics and Games (ACG) event called "AniManGaki". Derived from Anime, Manga, Games, and Gaki (Japanese slang for 'brat'), this event was inspired by Comic Fiesta & GACC (Games, Anime, Comic Circle). Initially, AniManGaki started out as a small college event in Sunway University and today, it is one of the most well-known ACG events in Malaysia.
As an active event-goer, I attended AniManGaki 2009 aside from other ACG events. I noticed that this event has this warm, friendly feeling unlike any other event i attended before. After my enrolment into Sunway University shortly after the event ended, I immediately joined Sun-U Anime Club, the organizer for AniManGaki in hoping to get involved with their future plans. As the sole person with knowledge in Graphic Design background, I volunteered as the Head of Design for AniManGaki starting from that year onwards. Since I was studying in websites during that semester, I took this opportunity to handle their website as well.
Every year, AniManGaki picks a theme to set new direction for the activities and design. This remains our tradition to avoid being repetitive and boring every year. As an inexperienced designer in the early years, it was too easy to change our logo annually based on our theme because there wasn't any rule on branding back then. After my third year, I realize that there were inconsistencies in the past years and its about time for me to set up our event brand logo as our event is gaining attention from public. This logo is expected to remain the same with a little twist based on the theme chosen.

To design a logo that represents our image as whole and remain memorable for the years to come, I have embark on a design process with the knowledge I acquired back in diploma:
A wide range of logo research was initiated to find the right direction to build our image as an event. Several keywords were to put together to identify common elements among them that defines "fun" and "playful".
Logo ranged from games to japanese pop culture that displays energetic and friendly element were included in these findings. Aside from that, logos from other event's were lined up together for comparison that define's how an event logo should look like and how can we stand out from them.
Over 30+ samples of sketches were explored to find the right image that suits our identity. As I noticed, no fonts were used as their logotype and most of it were custom made.
After narrowing down to a single idea, the logo was later then proceed to screen.
The logo was later transferred to digital copy in vector format and at this stage, some variation of design techniques were explored. This includes patterns, colors, shading and borders. The logo color set was later decided with orange gradient outlined by double border of black & white.
The orange color and the sun icon (the last letter "i") was referred to our event's birth location : Sunway. In Sunway, orange was widely used across their branding and so we followed their direction. The sun icon was derived from the word SUNway itself.
After the main copy of the logo was decided, logo ruling was established to prepare for different kinds of mediums. With this final step, this concludes AniManGaki's main logo to be used for the coming years.
As a result, our annual logo carries the same identity of the main logo by maintaining the shape and the orange color with our mascot. Up until now, the ruling remains the same for our official annual event logo. Some alterations are allowed as long as the logo is recognizeable.
AniManGaki 2013 - 2018 logo
In 2018, with help from external professional, we realized that our branding isn't complete yet. The branding further defines our typography and feel with the creation of mood board.

In the beginning, almost every item required for the event is designed by me. This includes event logo, event theme, poster, bunting, banner, pass tags, merchandise, ticket, booklet & T-Shirt. Only illustration was outsourced to an artist who later became our team member.
As the team grows, jobs are delegated to the young, passionate designers who are interested on which item to design.

From the beginning, the website was hosted in a free, limited hosting service. As we grow, we decided its about time we grab our domain name while it is still available. We bought the domain name and hosting plan separately for long term purposes. I handled most of the technical parts to get our website up and running. Recently, to abide with google's new SEO standard, we have secured our website with SSL certificate.
As the Head of Design, I was also responsible for guiding volunteers who knows a little to none about design. Tasks were delegated to them accordingly based on their capability and interests. As the team grows with the addition of experienced designers, more and more tasks that I used to hold responsible for are spread across the team.
